Khalid bin Sultan Al Saud (Arabic: خالد بن سلطان بن عبد العزيز آل سعود; born 24 September 1949) is the former deputy minister of defense, a member of the House of Saud, and a grandson of King Abdulaziz.

Early life and education

Prince Khalid was born on 24 September 1949.[2] He is the oldest son of Prince Sultan[3] and full brother of Fahd bin Sultan, Faisal bin Sultan and Turki bin Sultan. Their mother is Munira bint Abdulaziz bin Musaed bin Jiluwi[4] who died in Paris on 24 August 2011.[5] Moneera bint Abdulaziz was a sister of Alanoud, spouse of King Fahd. She was also cousin of King Khalid and Prince Muhammed.[2]

Khalid bin Sultan was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on 24 September 1949, the son of Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz. He graduated from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1968, and he also studied military tactics in the United States. Khalid started his military career by commanding an artillery force in Tabuk, and he purchased the nation's first guided missile from China. During the Gulf War, he was named commander of the joint Arab forces, serving as Norman Schwarzkopf's Arab counterpart. In 1991, he retired from the military to focus on business, but he was appointed to several advisory and political roles during the early 21st century. In 2009, he led the failed intervention against the Houthis in Yemen, and he was fired from his military post by Abdullah I of Saudi Arabia due to his inability to defeat the Houthis quickly.

Khalid ist der älteste Sohn von Prinz Sultan ibn Abd al-Aziz und der ersten Ehefrau Prinzessin Munira Bint Abdul Aziz Bin Musaid Bin Jiluwi Al-Saud. Fälschlicherweise wird im Zusammenhang mit seinem Geburtsdatum das seines jüngeren Halbbruders Prinz Bandar mit dem 2. Mai 1949 angegeben. Dieser wurde aber erst 1950 geboren. Prinz Khalid hat drei leibliche Brüder: Prinz Faisal, Prinz Fahd und Prinz Turki, und fünf leibliche Schwestern. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er in der Obhut seines Vaters, der in ihm seinen Nachfolger im Verteidigungsministerium sah.
