Born and raised in New York City, Sekou Bunch was exposed to the arts, virtually from the very beginning. As a young child, Bunch showed great promise as a painter and dancer, both of which he pursued passionately. Upon receiving his first bass around 1974, Bunch proved to be a quick study and soon began playing local gigs and jam sessions. At 17, Sekou teamed up with GRP artist Tom Browne, with whom he recorded the best-selling funk classic Funkin’ for Jamaica album.
Sekou eventually moved to Los Angeles, where his career picked up steam. While based in LA, Bunch toured and recorded with the late George Howard and collaborated with producers Angela Winbush and Ronald Isley and was ultimately named musical director for the Isley Brothers, a position he held for eight years.

New York City born bass player Sekou Bunch worked together with Tom Browne, when he recorded the hit Funkin' For Jamaica. has performed and/or recorded with Quincy Jones, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Roger Daltry, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, Paul Anka, George Benson, Wayne Shorter, the Winans, Lionel Richie, Toni Braxton, Freddie Hubbard, Roberta Flack, Liza Minneli and many others.
In 1991 he released his first solo debut album Sekou. His sophomore album The Next Levelfollowed in 2008 on Trippin 'n Rhythm. The album contains a harmonious balance of covers and original compositions. Starter is a rendition of Sun Goddess, the original 1974 classic collaboration of Ramsey Lewis & Earth, Wind & Fire. Sekou has assembled the perfect team with a strong Everette Harp on sax and an overtopping Stanley Clarke on tenor bass, and vocalists Fred White and Lamont Van Hook serving the typical EWF voicing.

Sekou Bunch, musician, composer and sometimes actor was born and raised in New York
in a home filled with a household filled with the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Wes Montgomery,
Miles Davis, James Brown, Mongo Santamaria and many other artists that would be
inspirations to him later in life.
At the age of 8, Sekou's first interest in the arts manifested itself in his work as a still-life and
portrait artist. One of his paintings, an oil of the Brooklyn Bridge, was chosen for display at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. But music had more of an impact on Sekou, especially the music
of James Brown. Sekou and two of his brothers started a dance review with the group name
the Black Executives and began entering local talent contests, often winning first place
awards. In fact, Bunch is considered one of the pioneers of break dancing.
