Steven Kellogg
Steven Kellogg was born and raised in Connecticut with his three sisters. Inspired partially by a fascination with picture books, he fell in love with writing, drawing and storytelling at an early age. Kellogg’s particular interest in animal stories was expressed in the creation of stories of his own. He would sit between his sisters with a stack of paper and a pencil rattling off tales, scribbling illustrations to accompany them and then rapidly passing the pictures around. He credits his preschool love of books and his enthusiasm for illustration to his determination to make drawing the center of his future career. He continued drawing throughout his school years and went on to get a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1963. He majored in illustration and was particularly interested in the few projects he did that were related to the creation of picture books. Biography
"(A) synthesis of literature and the visual arts, and the relationship of the written word and the picture is its essence." These are the words Steven Kellogg uses to define a picture book. As an author, he has to his credit over thirty stories that he has created or adapted. As an illustrator, he has twice that, clearly qualifying as an expert on picture books.
His love for the genre began in childhood in Connecticut when he used to sit between his two sisters with a stack of paper and a pencil, telling stories and illustrating as he went along, until his sisters were restless or buried in paper. Mr. Kellogg's fascination with drawing, particularly animals, continued throughout his school days, culminating in a degree from Rhode Island School of Design. While attending college, he won a fellowship to spend his senior year studying and working in Florence, Italy. Steven Castle Kellogg (born October 6, 1941, in Norwalk, Connecticut) is an American author and illustrator who has created more than 90 children's books.
On November 12, 2011, Kellogg was given an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Findlay in Ohio. All of his original illustrations were donated to the Mazza Museum of International Art from Picture Books at Findlay. The donation was made possible in part by a $350,000 gift by close friend, Anthony Edwards. More than 2700 works of art were included.[1]
