So I met Harold through the Gelfand family. I was invited to a big, wonderful dinner party for Harold after he got married. And from that point on, I became involved in Harold’s social world, like having dinner with him and a group of friends at his beautiful house. He wasn’t really involved in charities back then. His wife kept him very busy. She liked the glamorous world.

Betty Francis: About 20 years ago when I started doing the society pages for The Desert Sun, a friend of mine kept talking about this Harold Matzner guy. She insisted I had to meet him. So I’m at some gala and there’s Harold and a long line of people waiting to greet him. I introduced myself to him, this stranger, and then started to move on, but he grabbed me, gave me a big hug, and whispered, “I just love the way you write.” Well, he won my heart right there and then.

How did Harold Matzner make his money?

Harold has been in the Palm Springs area for over 30 years and has several strong investments throughout the years in the area. He is the owner of the famous Spencer’s restaurant and has been credited with revitalizing the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Harold Matzner retires from Palm Springs Art Museum board; two replacements named

Harold Matzner, a philanthropist and owner of Spencer's Restaurant in Palm Springs, is retiring as executive vice chair of the Palm Springs Art Museum. The institution has already named two replacements to the board of trustees.

Matzner, 84, told The Desert Sun he retired Wednesday after serving on the museum board for 35 years and donating $6 million to the institution.

"I've been involved in just about everything that happened at the museum that was on the business side and that were a little different than the usual daily run of business," Matzner said.

Scott Slaven, director of marketing, communications and design at the museum, confirmed Matzner's departure but did not offer further comment.

When asked why he was retiring, Matzner said his decision was based on "freedom of movement" as a non-board member on issues such as "Forever Marilyn," a controversial 26-foot-tall statue to be installed near the museum on Museum Way.
