3 American doctors killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan -- An American pediatrician killed when an Afghan security guard opened fire Thursday at a Kabul hospital was dedicated to helping poor children, volunteering in Afghanistan to train young doctors and periodically returning to Chicago to work in a Christian clinic on the city's southwest side.

Dr. Jerry Umanos "was always working to help inner-city kids and trying to help out any needy, poor kids anywhere," said Jeff Schuitema, Umanos' brother-in-law.

The fatal shooting of three Americans on Thursday at Cure International Hospital in western Kabul was the latest in a string of deadly attacks on foreign civilians in the Afghan capital this year. An American nurse also was wounded in the hospital shootings.

Cure International is a charity based in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, located outside Harrisburg.

"Our families and friends have suffered a great loss, and our hearts are aching," said Jan Schuitema, Umanos' wife, from outside the family home in Chicago on Thursday afternoon.

‘Our hearts are broken,’ friend says of Chicago doctor shot in Afghanistan

For 16 years, Dr. Jerry Umanos worked as a pediatrician at a Christian health center in Chicago, then decided in 2005 to travel to Afghanistan to continue his practice and help train doctors. On Thursday, he was one of three American doctors shot to death by an Afghan police officer who opened fire inside one of Kabul’s leading hospitals in the latest deadly attack aimed at foreigners, officials said.

“We have lost a dear friend,” James Brooks, chief ministry officer for the Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago told reporters. “Our hearts are broken. Please pray for us.”

Dr. Bruce Rowell, the chief clinical officer, said Umanos was “for many of us on staff, the pediatrician for our very own children.”

Last summer, Umanos had briefly returned to Chicago then went back to Afghanistan

The shooting took place at CURE International Hospital of Kabul, which specializes in maternity and pediatric care, according to the group’s website. The facility opened in 2002, began operating as a hospital in 2005

A Chicago-area doctor was among those killed Thursday in an attack at a charity-based children's hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, colleagues confirmed.

Dr. Jerry Umanos was a pediatrician at Lawndale Christian Health Center for more than 16 years, according to a biography on the center's website. He worked in Kabul in the only two medical facilities that offer medical training programs for Afghan doctors.

Dr. Bruce Rowell said Umanos' death is a great loss to his family, those with whom he worked and the people of Afghanistan, adding that Umanos' volunteered his time to train medical residents for nearly a decade.

"We have lost a dear friend," said LCHC's Chief Ministry Officer James Brooks. "Please pray for us at this time."

"It's going to be rough because Dr. Umanos saw a lot of patients. The kids loved him and especially the parents, you know," said colleague Alice Moore. "It's going to be rough. It's going to be rough on everybody. Imagine the staff. I can't imagine what it's going to do to the patients.
