Chaim topol height

Topol appeared in more than 30 films and, apart from Tevye, he is best known for playing Dr Hans Zarkov in Flash Gordon (1980) and Milos Columbo in James Bond film For Your Eyes Only (1981). He also featured in a BBC Two series, Topol’s Israel (1985). In addition to acting, he wrote three books and illustrated more than 20. In 1967, he also founded Variety Israel, an organisation helping children with special needs, and later co-founded another charity to help Arab and Jewish children with life-threatening diseases.

Along with the musical duo Esther & Abi Ofarim and a new generation of Israeli writers, including Amos Oz, whose first novels were published in the mid-1960s, and SY Agnon, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966, Topol symbolised a new Israeli culture.

Topol died on Wednesday 8 March, aged 87. His death was announced by Israel’s president Isaac Herzog, who described him as a "gifted actor who conquered many stages in Israel and overseas, filled the cinema screens with his presence and especially entered deep into our hearts".

Born in Tel Aviv, Palestine (and now in Israel) Chaim Topol made his film debut in 1961, in a black & white, Hebrew language film I Like Mike. Further film roles, including Sallah (1965, Israeli-made), Cast a Giant Shadow (1966), Before Winter Comes and A Talent for Loving (both 1969) followed.

In 1971 he played, perhaps, his most famous role as Tevye in the hit film version of Fiddler on the Roof (1971). He received an Academy Award nomination for his work in the film, but was on active duty with the Isreali army at the time in 1972. He was, however, granted leave so he could attend the ceremony in Los Angeles; which brought him instant and enduring recognition (20 years later he was still playing the part on stage). Chaim Topol (Hebrew: חיים טופול‎; 9 September 1935 – 8 March 2023), mononymously known as Topol,[1] was an Israeli actor and singer. He is best known for his portrayal of Tevye, the lead role in the stage musical Fiddler on the Roof and the 1971 film adaptation, performing this role more than 3,500 times from 1967 through 2009.[1]

Topol began acting during his Israeli army service as a member of the Nahal entertainment troupe. He later toured Israel with kibbutz theatre and satirical theatre companies. He was a co-founder of the Haifa Theatre. His breakthrough film role came in 1964 as the title character in Sallah Shabati, by Israeli writer Ephraim Kishon, for which he won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer—Male.
