Ready for a what am I doing with my life moment? Here you go; 16-year-old Shuan Hern Lee, a student from The University of Western Australia, is the first Australian to win the prestigious 2019 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition in Dallas, Texas. He competed against more than 200 teenage applicants from 32 countries to claim the top prize.
Lee began his music studies at UWA at the age of 14 and won the competition with his outstanding performance of Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No 3 in D minor with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
He said he was inspired by Rachmaninoff’s famous quote: “Music comes straight from the heart and talks only to the heart, it is love.”
Lee said he was excited to receive the top prize and for the possibilities that lay ahead for a career in music.
“Music is a universal language and what I love most about playing piano is the fact you can express your emotions,” he said.

19 year old West Australian pianist, Shuan Hern Lee started piano lessons at 2 and half with his dad, Yoon Sen Lee. At the age of 14, Shuan Hern has been accepted as tertiary music student at the University of Western Australia. Shuan Hern is also a student of International Piano Academy In contri Col Maestro of Imola, Italy and is currently studying with Yoon Sen Lee and Ingrid Fliter.
Shuan Hern obtained the diploma of the Associate of the Trinity College of London at the age of 9 and Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Licentiate of Music of Australia with Distinction in Piano Performance at the age of 10 (AMEB). At 14, he obtained the Fellowship of Music of Australia diploma, which is the highest honour and also the youngest candidate ever to achieve this diploma in piano performance of the Australian Music Examinations Board.

Australia’s young piano prodigy, 13 year old Shuan Hern Lee was born in Perth, Western Australia. He started piano lessons at 2 and half with his dad, Yoon Sen Lee. Shuan Hern has won top prizes at various international piano competitions in USA, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. He has performed in various countries throughout the world as soloist, in gala concerts and in music festivals. He has also performed concerto works with various orchestras in Australia, Armenia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Moscow.
Shuan Hern obtained the Associate of the Trinity College (ATCL) of London piano performance recital diploma at the age of 9. At the age of 10, he obtained both the DipABRSM and the Licentiate Diploma in Music for piano performance of the Australian Music Examinations Board with Distinction (L.Mus.A. Dist) and also the L.Mus. Prize.
