Kurt Kuykendall

American soccer player

Kurt Kuykendall is a retired American soccergoalkeeper who played professionally in the North American Soccer League.

Kuykendall attended American University, where he was a 1973 Honorable Mention (third team) All-American soccer player. He was inducted into the American University Eagles Hall of Fame in 1996.[1] In 1974, the Washington Diplomats selected Kuykendall in the first round (second overall) of the North American Soccer League draft. In 1975, he moved to the New York Cosmos for two seasons. In 1978 while working as a real estate broker he made an appearance in an indoor match for the Diplomats giving up 7 goals in two periods of relief for the injured Eric Martin.[2] He finished his professional career with one game with the Rochester Lancers in 1979 as a replacement goalkeeper when the NASL players went on strike.

All five of his children – Kris, Shawn, Jason, Jaime and Samantha – play soccer.[3]

For the Glory, a feature film based on Kurt's career, was released in 2012.[4]

William H. “Kirk” Kuykendall is an accomplished Austin attorney and community leader with a well-established network of business and professional relationships across Texas.  Kirk has a diverse history of public service through a variety of community organizations and governmental agencies.

In 2013, the Austin City Council and Travis County Commissioners Court jointly appointed Kirk to the Travis County Health District Board of Managers (d/b/a Central Health), where he served through December of 2016.  During his term as a member of the Board of Managers, the Board moved to improve access to care, operational efficiency, quality of patient care outcomes, and reduction of costs within the publicly supported healthcare delivery system through transformative innovations and collaboration.  Kirk chaired the agency’s Strategic Planning Committee and led the development of its 2017-2019 strategic plan. Kirk’s leadership as chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee produced an overhaul of compliance policies and the adoption of a Board code of conduct

KURT KUYKENDALL

In 1969, Kurt’s senior year of high school, he was cut from the varsity basketball team which led him to Jesus Christ into his life. Glorifying and serving God became his life’s motivation. He attended D‐1 American University where he graduated with a degree in Political Science.  God redeemed sports in his life at AU -- after only playing soccer for 3 months he made the Men’s Varsity Soccer team.  He went on to become an All-American, a US Olympian and professional soccer player all in only 3.5 years from starting to play. This included playing professionally with the legendary Pele and NY Cosmos. God then moved him out of professional sports and he became a successful realtor with REMAX and ultimately was inducted into REMAX’s International Hall of Fame.

Kurt and his wife, Sherry, have been married 44 years. Together they had the privilege of , and training their 5 children, who all played soccer at D‐1 colleges as well.  They currently have 9 grandchildren.
