As director general of the World Health Organization Dr Lee Jong-wook continued the revival of the agency begun by his predecessor, Gro Harlem Brundtland. Having taken over from the formidable Norwegian in 2003, Dr Lee continued to push health to the top of the global political agenda, winning plaudits for his style, which was based on action not words.

He entered office as the threat of severe acute respiratory syndrome was subsiding, and it was bird flu—a pandemic that has yet to emerge—that was to dominate much of his time as leader of WHO. However, in the long term it is likely to be his bold, if ultimately unattainable, pledges on HIV treatment that will be remembered.

I have to declare an interest here. First, I worked for Dr Lee; second, I was involved in commissioning this biography; third, I am honoured to count the author, Desmond Avery, as a friend; and finally, I assisted in providing some of the content for this book. So take that into account as I offer a brief opinion on this wonderful book. For I do believe this is an extraordinary biography, beautifully written ('exquisite' according to Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet), honest, revealing, even humorous, and totally compelling.

Few people knew 'JW' well, even fewer knew of his childhood, those formative years in Korea when his family fled Seoul, described here in any detail for the first time. His tragic premature death at the age of 61 from an intracranial haemorrhage, on the opening morning of the World Health Assembly in Geneva in May 2006, provides bookends for the biography, and in between, Desmond captures and analyses various events in his life, particularly his career in public health with the World Health Organ

Lee Dong-wook (Korean: 이동욱; born 6 November 1981) is a South Korean actor and presenter. He is best known for his leading roles in the television dramasMy Girl (2005), Scent of a Woman (2011), The Fugitive of Joseon (2013), Hotel King (2014), Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017), Life (2018), Hell Is Other People (2019), Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020), Bad and Crazy (2021), and Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (2023) in the title role. Early life and education

In 2005, Lee enrolled in Joongbu University, majoring in media and broadcasting arts.^[3]
