Dennis J. "Chip" Wilson (born April 25, 1955) is an American-Canadian businessman, investor, and philanthropist who has founded several retail apparel companies, most notably the yoga-inspired athletic apparel company Lululemon Athletica.[1][2]

Wilson is widely regarded as the progenitor and a pioneering figure of the athleisure phenomenon, which has permeated mainstream North American society since its emergence in 2014.[3]

Early life

Dennis J. "Chip" Wilson was born on April 25, 1955 in Los Angeles, California.[4][5][6] He grew up in an athletic environment along with his two siblings, his Canadian father Dennis Wilson being an ice hockey and football player, and his American mother Ruth Noel being a gymnast. His parents met while they were attending Brigham Young University, as his father played football there.[6] After his father stopped playing football, his parents did not earn much from their athletic endeavours. Early life

Dennis “Chip” Wilson was born and raised in California until the age of five when his family moved to Calgary, Alberta. In 1973, Wilson relocated to Edmonton to begin university, however transferred to Alaska where he began working on the oil pipeline.

Education

Wilson attended the University of Calgary, graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

Career

Chip Wilson founded his first retail apparel company in 1979 named Westbeach Apparel. This company targeted the snowboard, skateboard, and surfing markets, gaining much traction selling a large range of outdoor clothing and accessories. After selling Westbeach Apparel, Wilson later founded Lululemon Athletica until 2013. After the company lost its way of product development and culture, he stepped down as chairman of the board of directors and sold half his shares to Advent International. I was born in California and moved to Calgary, Alberta at the age of 5. I moved to Edmonton for University in 1973 and then relocated to Alaska to work on the oil pipeline in 1975 where I read the top 100 books of all time while trading my life in for money. My dad remarried Cathy, an Air Canada employee and as her stepson, I received 5 free annual flights anywhere in the world. By the age of 19, I might have been the wealthiest, most travelled and best-read boy in the world.
