Clare Eames
American actress and stage director (1894–1930)
Clare Eames (August 5, 1894 – November 8, 1930) was an American actress and stage director, and the first wife of playwright Sidney Howard.
Early years
Eames was born August 5, 1894, in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Clare (Hamilton) and Hayden Eames.[1] Her maternal grandfather was Maryland governor and senator William Thomas Hamilton. Her aunt was American soprano Emma Eames.[2]
Eames' family moved to Cleveland, Ohio when she was 11 years old. From there, she went to Paris to live with her aunt and studied drama.[3] She attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.[4]
Career
In 1919, Eames joined the repertory theatre headed by Ethel Barrymore.[5]
After World War I, Eames was considered one of the leading new female lights of the Broadway stage, performing classical roles in plays by Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw.[6] She made her stage debut in 1918.[2] As a virtual unknown on Broadway, she won acclaim fo

They have two sons, Niall and Michael, two daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren. Recently she was in conversation with Alf McCreary in the Belfast Telegraph.
Q Can you tell us something about your background?
A I was born in Dublin and grew up in Belfast. My father, Captain Ward Daly, was killed in action in the North African campaign in 1943, during the Second World War. I was only six weeks old, so my mother, Olive, had the sole responsibility for my upbringing. She was an absolutely wonderful mother and I enjoyed a very happy childhood. She was matron of the Forster Green Hospital in Belfast and I learned from her the standards of commitment and responsibility to others.
She had a great and sustaining faith and I always knew the Christian faith and, in particular, the Anglican Church to be an integral part of our lives.
