Between 1741 and 1755, the historian of philosophy Jacob Brucker (1696–1770) and the Augsburg engraver and publisher Johann Jacob Haid (1704–1767) published a portrait gallery representing the famous learned authors of their day, Bilder-Sal heutiges Tages lebender, und durch Gelahrheit berühmter Schrifftsteller (Portrait gallery of living writers, famous for their learning).¹ Executed in ten series of ten portraits each, ultimately bound together in two folio volumes, it had something of a very expensive set of football pictures, representing scholars in all disciplines from the German lands as well as from abroad, although the majority (75%) were German.
