On the eve of inauguration of Giorgi Margvelashvili as Georgia’s new president, U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated Georgia and praised the role of outgoing president Saakashvili and outgoing PM Ivanishvili for "strengthening" country’s democratic institutions.

“On behalf of the American people, I congratulate the people of Georgia as they celebrate the inauguration of a new President and mark the first time a presidential transition has taken place as the result of a peaceful, democratic election.  I extend my warm congratulations to President Giorgi Margvelashvili on his inauguration day,” Obama said in a statement on November 16.

“The path to this day was marked by the contributions of many distinguished political leaders over the past twenty years, including outgoing President Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, who have both played a vital role in strengthening Georgia’s democratic institutions, together with civil society and the people of Georgia.  We appreciate what these two leaders have accompl

President Barack Obama today announced the designation of a Presidential Delegation to Georgia to attend the Inauguration of His Excellency Giorgi Margvelashvili on November 17, 2013.

The Honorable Rajiv Shah, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development will lead the delegation.

In the framework of working visit to Washington, President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili held multiple meetings and gave keynote addresses at several US institutions. President’s visit aims to intensify dialogue to consolidate the support of the United States towards Georgia.

Bilateral meetings

President Giorgi Margvelashvili held bilateral meetings with US Government officials from Legislative as well as Administrative Branches.
From the U.S. House of Representatives, President Margvelashvili met with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Kevin McCarthy, Co-chairs of Georgia Caucus Congressman Ted Poe and Congressman Gerry Connolly. During the meetings, President Margvelashvili discussed security threats that Georgia is facing from Russia and informed the Congressmen on the death of the Georgian citizen in de-facto Tskhinvali Region and called it an anomaly and injustice.  Additionally, President discussed Russia’s aggression and a hybrid war in Georgia.
