The music of post-hardcore and indie rock band mewithoutYou has both haunted and intrigued me. The frontman's shouted slam poetry delivery can be hard for some listeners to become accustomed to, but once gotten used to, can become addictive and polarizing. People either hate it or love it. The lyrics, dealing with depression, suicide, self-confession, spiders (yes, spiders), talking vegetables and other talking animals can be too bizarre for some people to take. For others, they are magical. Additionally, the frontman's former vocal lifestyle of extreme pacifism, freeganism, and dumpster diving can stand in opposition to the mainstream American life. And finally, the frontman's religious identity (or lack of identity!) is a thorn in the side of those who desire clean categories. The frontman is a member of the three world religions: He is Muslim. And Jewish. And Christian. All at the same time. mewithoutYou, and its frenetic frontman Aaron Weiss, can be a bit much for some people to handle.

Saying “Goodbye, I” to mewithoutYou
“Now it’s just Rival Schools and mewithoutYou on our car rides”
– The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, “Gig Life”
I came to mewithoutYou by way of the epigraphical line from TWIABP’s probably-now-old-enough-to-be-called seminal record WHENEVER, IF EVER. mewithoutYou was, for years, always a band I’d heard a lot about, even after listening to “Gig Life.” I had heard the band spoken about in terms of its tenacity—“these guys have been doing this a long time,” was always the sentiment. In 2013, when TWIABP’s debut dropped, mewithoutYou had been touring for over a decade and would continue to do so for nearly a decade more. But the first time I heard mewithoutYou, I was confident I had never heard anything like it.
This brings us to the first hurdle of how to cleverly and effectively describe the music.
The Weiss brothers were born Jewish, but over two decades of songwriting together, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian ideals have touched their lives and music. The songs Aaron Weiss (frontman, brother, singe

mewithoutYou
American rock band
MewithoutYou, usually stylized as mewithoutYou, was an American rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The band consisted of Aaron Weiss (vocals), Michael Weiss and Brandon Beaver (guitars), Greg Jehanian (bass guitar), and Rickie Mazzotta (drums). The band's music is generally dominated by spoken-word vocals and free-ranging drums, bass, and guitar.
History
Early years, first albums: 2001–2008
The band was originally conceived as a side project. The Weiss brothers, Aaron and Michael, together with guitarist Christopher Kleinberg, were playing together in another band, called the Operation, with bassist Greg Jehanian. Aaron wanted to start another project, to experiment with new sounds. With the help of Ricky Mazzotta, Ray Taddeo, and his brother Mike, Aaron formed what is now formally known as mewithoutYou. At first, the band was a four-piece, with Aaron on both bass and vocals. However, in only a few months, Chris Kleinberg joined to play third guitar. The band released their first EP, I Never Said That I Was Brave,
