Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta (15 April 1937 - 21 January 2021)[1] was a former Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force. He was appointed in 1986 to succeed Etim Inyang and was succeeded by Aliyu Attah in 1990.[2][3] He was later Coordinator of National Security to President of NigeriaIbrahim Babangida.

Early life

He was born in Jimeta on 15 April 1937.[4]

Education

Gambo as he was popularly called, attended Jimeta Elementary School (1947–49) and Yola Middle School (1950–55) for his early education.

Thereafter, he went to Bauchi Provincial Secondary School (1956–58) and Government College Keffi (1958–59), before attending Nigeria Police College Kaduna (1959) and Police College Ikeja (1959).

‘My friend, where is Anini?’ That was not the kind of question a police chief would expect from his commander-in-chief in front of the media. But that was the question Ibrahim Babangida, military president, asked Etim Inyang, the inspector general of police, in the full glare of media cameras sometime in October 1986.

Clearly embarrassed, Inyang replied: “We shall find him soon.”

The Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) — the highest ruling body in the country then — had just held a meeting to discuss insecurity in the country, with the reign of terror by Lawrence Nomayangbon Anini and his armed robbery gang in Bendel state (now Edo and Delta) getting all the headlines. They were robbing and raping in daylight, led by Anini, who was styled “Robin Hood of Africa” because of the added drama of spraying his notes from his loot on the “masses” after operations. He killed policemen mercilessly.

Born on April 15, 1937, in Jimeta in the present Adamawa State of Nigeria, Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta was a former Inspector General of  Police (IGP). He attended Jimeta Elementary School (1947-1949), Yola Middle School (1950-1955), Bauchi Provincial Secondary School (1956-1958) and Government College, Keffi (1958-1959). Gambo, as he was popularly called, joined the police force and attended the Police College, Kaduna, in 1959 and thereafter Police College, Ikeja, also in 1959.

After leaving the police college, Gambo began his career as a cadet sub-inspector. In 1963, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He became a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in 1967 and full superintendent in 1969. In 1972, he was promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) and became an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in 1974. He became a Commissioner of Police (CP) in 1977 and served in Lagos, where he got national fame as a crack police officer dealing with robberies in the state.
