Suharto[b][c] (8 June 1921 – 27 January 2008) was an Indonesian military officer and politician, who served as the second and longest serving president of Indonesia.

Suharto's presidency and legacy is highly divisive. Widely regarded as a military dictator by international observers, Suharto led Indonesia as an authoritarian regime from 1967 until his resignation in 1998 following nationwide unrest.[3][4][5] His 31-year rule over Indonesia is considered one of the most controversial in the 20th century: due to allegations of corruption and his government's central role to the perpetration of mass killings against communists early in his rule and subsequent discrimination of ethnic Chinese Indonesians, irreligious people, and trade unionists.[6][7][8]

Suharto was born in the village of Kemusuk, near the city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He grew up in humble circumstances. During Indonesia's fight for independence, he joined the newly formed Indonesian Army.

Suharto rose to power after a failed coup by the Indonesian Communist Party that killed six generals in the Indonesian Army. The first president of Indonesia, Sukarno, was seen by both the people and political elites as being too close with the Communist Party and wanted him to step down.

Suharto was appointed as President by the Indonesian Parliament in 1967. Suharto ruled over Indonesia for over 30 years. His time as president was known as "Orde Baru" period. buku ini juga disusun dari hasil wawancara n keikutsertaan penulis dalam acara silaturahmi di keluarga pak harto. tambahan lagi adalah bahwa Roeslan Abdulgani, ayah sang penulis, cukup dekat dengan keluarga pak harto..

sebagian orang - termasuk teman2 di klub buku ini - udah pasti punya penilaian sendiri menyangkut kepemimpinan pak harto, karena pasti udah ngerasain juga. ada yang menilai positif ada yang nilai negatif..

tapi, penulis, benar-benar lihai dalam menyeimbangkan hal positif dan negatif dari sosok presiden kedua kita, sehingga pada akhirnya, setelah menutup buku ini.. pembacanya - paling tidak saya - akan sulit utk menilai mana yang lebih berat.. positifnya atau negatifnya..
