A Spanish legend, Villa is the all-time leading goalscorer in Spanish national team history. He also scored more than 100 goals for Valencia before moving to Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. The goals kept coming in MLS as he has so far notched 65 total, with that number likely to rise heading into his fourth season.

INTERNATIONAL: Villa scored five goals at the 2010 World Cup and four goals at the 2008 Euros to help Spain capture those two trophies. He has registered more than 90 caps with La Roja since making his debut in 2005.

OUTSIDE MLS: Villa spent time at Sporting Gijón and Real Zaragoza before signing with Valencia. He was named the Spanish Player of the Year in 2005-06, his first season with the club. He has won three of the last four La Liga titles with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid and captured the 2010-11 Champions League crown. He became NYCFC's first player when he signed with the club on June 2.

Nicknamed El Guaje (The Kid in Asturian) due to a reputation of playing football with children much older than him,[8][9] Villa sustained a serious injury as a child but managed to start his professional career with Sporting de Gijón in 2001. He moved to Real Zaragoza after two seasons, where he made his La Liga debut, and won the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España.
