John McCabe
John McCabe decided to be a composer at the age of five-and-a-half. He studied in Manchester and Munich, and then embarked on an international career as composer and pianist (his complete CD survey of Haydn’s Piano Sonatas has become a landmark recording). He worked in almost every genre, though large-scale forms lie at the heart of his catalogue. Apart from full-length ballets like Edward II and the two-part Arthur, his seven symphonies, at least twenty concertante works, and music such as Notturni ed Alba (for soprano and orchestra) and The Chagall Windows for orchestra place him at the centre of the repertoire. His output of chamber music, including seven string quartets and numerous quintets and trios, is equally outstanding, and he made a major contribution to the field of piano music. McCabe’s mature style was characterised by a dramatic post-tonalism, and vivid orchestrations, combined with both accessibility and integrity. His music was published by Novello for over 50 years.

John McCabe (November 14, 1920 – September 27, 2005), born John Charles McCabe III, was an American Shakespearean scholar and author, whose first book was the authorized biography of the comedy team known as Laurel and Hardy. This joint biography, as well as his separate books on each man, has been reprinted.
Early life and education
John Charles McCabe III (always called Jack)[1] was born in Detroit, Michigan. His father was an engineer; the son loved acting from an early age, and at seven started to perform professionally with the Jessie Bonstelle Stock Company in the city.[1]
After attending the University of Detroit High School, he served in Europe, from 1943 to 1945, as a sergeant with the United States Army Air Forces.[1] After returning to Detroit, he completed his undergrad

Biography
John McCabe was born in Huyton, Liverpool, Merseyside. A prolific composer from an early age, he had written thirteen symphonies by the time he was eleven (Rickards 2001). After studies in Manchester and Munich he embarked upon a career as a composer and virtuoso pianist (he still tours internationally as a recitalist). He has worked in almost every genre, though large-scale forms lie at the heart of his catalogue with five symphonies, fifteen concertante works and eight ballet scores to his name. Like many composers of his generation, McCabe experimented with serialism in his early career but his mature style is characterised by a dramatic post-tonalism, and vivid orchestrations.
He first became known as a pianist, playing Bax, Corigliano, Haydn, Hindemith, Rawsthorne, and Webern.[citation needed]
